Whole Sign houses
How the Lagna sign becomes House 1 in the current production convention.
- Whole Sign assigns the complete Lagna sign to House 1, the next sign to House 2, and so on.
- House interpretation should be combined with the house lord, occupants, aspects and divisional context.
- Different house systems exist; KP tools in AstroVedic360 use a separate Placidus path.
A house system maps zodiac positions into twelve life-area sectors. AstroVedic360's main Vedic chart uses Whole Sign houses: the complete Lagna sign is House 1, the next complete sign is House 2, and so on around the zodiac.
This is simple to describe but important to state because other systems exist. The separate KP path uses Placidus cusps. Mixing a Whole Sign interpretation with Placidus house numbers without disclosure can create apparent contradictions.
Whole Sign mapping
Once the Lagna sign is known, house numbers are assigned by sign order rather than by a separate unequal cusp calculation. If the Lagna is Karka, Karka is House 1, Simha House 2, Kanya House 3 and so on until Mithuna as House 12.
A planet's house is therefore determined by its sign relative to the Lagna. Its exact degree still matters for aspects, divisional charts and other calculations, but it does not change the Whole Sign house until the planet crosses a sign boundary.
How to interpret a house
A house should not be read from occupancy alone. Traditional analysis can include the house sign, house lord, the lord's placement and strength, occupants, aspects, relevant Vargas, Ashtakavarga support and the active Dasha.
A vacant house is not an inactive house. The house lord and aspect relationships still exist. Likewise, a single difficult factor should not be converted into a guaranteed event without the wider chart context.
Why KP looks different
KP astrology commonly uses Placidus unequal cusps, so a planet can be placed in a different house than in a Whole Sign chart while retaining the same zodiac longitude. That is a methodology difference, not necessarily an ephemeris error.
When comparing sites, check the house system before judging a mismatch. Also confirm whether a displayed 'Bhava chart' is a Whole Sign view, a cusp-based view or another regional convention.
Worked example: same planet, different house system
Assume the Lagna is late Kanya and a planet is early Tula. Under Whole Sign houses, all of Tula is House 2, so the planet is in House 2.
A Placidus system calculates cusps from local geometry. Depending on latitude and time, the same early-Tula planet could fall on a different side of the second-house cusp. The zodiac longitude is the same; only the house framework differs.
The main AstroVedic360 Vedic chart uses Whole Sign houses. KP pages disclose their separate Placidus implementation and do not silently substitute one system for another.
